The teen, identified by police as Jose Chavez, was shot Dec. 20 after he slashed the face of a Will County Sheriff’s deputy who was responding to a reported domestic dispute at his home in the 2300 block of Gaylord Road, according to the sheriff's department. The home is located near the intersection of Plainfield and Caton Farm roads.

Police said deputies arrived at the home around 7:25 p.m. after relatives reported that Chavez was acting erratically and threatening family members with a knife.
According to police, a relative let two deputies into the home, where they encountered the teen standing in a hallway armed with a knife. Chavez refused repeated orders to drop the knife, police said, and “subsequently rushed the two deputies and attacked one of the deputies with a knife.”
The female deputy, who sustained a deep laceration to her face, shot Chavez once in the chest, police said.
After he was shot, Chavez ran from the residence, but was apprehended in the driveway by two Crest Hill police officers, according to the sheriff’s department.
Both Chavez and the deputy were taken to Provena St. Joseph Medical Center, where they underwent surgery.
While police said the deputy is expected to make a full recovery, Chavez was reportedly on life support following the shooting.
Deputy Chief Ken Kaupas said sheriff’s deputies had contact with Chavez prior to the Dec. 20 incident, and added the attack “may have been fueled by [the teen’s] use of drugs earlier in the evening.”
Delgado Funeral Home in Joliet is handling funeral arrangements for the teen, according to the coroner’s office.
The sheriff’s department is investigating the incident, and an autopsy is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 29.
