Welcome to "Hey, Mom and Dad"—a weekly feature in which we ask our Facebook fans to share their views on parenting. Every week, we get the conversation started by taking a look back at a question we asked parents the week before on Patch Facebook pages from around the area.
Young ladies have been sneaking makeup past their parents for generations. They'll wait to get to school to put it on, and wipe it clean away before they dare step back in the house. It's an issue that's not likely to go away any time soon.
That got us wondering ... when should girls have to stop sneaking around?
What's an appropriate age for young ladies to be allowed to wear makeup?
Diana T. Lil girls these days are such in a hurry to grow up...it's truly up to us as parents to help them not grow up too fast. If only they would realize: you only get to be a kid ONCE so enjoy it because you will spend the rest of your life being an adult. A lil lipgloss & nail polish is ok and well if we must delve into everything else I guess once high school hits...but not plastered on looking "cheap"! Subtle & natural...definitely nothing over the top. via Oswego Patch Facebook
J.C. M. 45 or after I am dead, whichever comes first. via Montgomery Patch Facebook
Hazoom M. What's the rush? My daughter is turning 14 this July and the only thing she'll wear is lip gloss... I think mascara is fine.. I also think the sooner these girls start putting make up on the sooner they will notice big pores mo matter what type of make up... via Bolingbrook Patch Facebook
Charlene S. As long as humanly possible. The younger the girl starts wearing makeup, the faster her skin starts to wear and tear. If she absolutely wants to use makeup, limit her to clear lipgloss and mascara. Foundation, powders, bronzers, and cover up ruin skin. via Plainfield Patch Facebook
Crystal J. I feel this way because I'm a realist. Take a walk around a public Jr High. Your girls are probably already using their friends make up already and washing it off before they get home. I would rather be able to monitor what she uses and buy it for her with basic rules in place. Not to mention, I wouldn't want either of my girls getting make up tips from some of the girls I've seen walking around via Joliet Patch Facebook
Bree G. Blush and a light lip stick is one thing at 12 but NO eye make-up till after age 14. That's our rule. via Shorewood Patch Facebook
Jacqueline Kinney That's funny cause my mom also took me to Merle Norman when I was in 8th grade. So I also say 14. (My daughter's not even 2 yet so I have plenty of time to change my mind) via Channahon-Minooka Patch Facebook
